On 30 January 2018, the Australian Government launched a new strategic plan for the nation: Australia 2030: Prosperity through Innovation.
This visionary plan from Innovation and Science Australia sets out ‘ambitions for enhancing the national culture of innovation’ and is designed to act as a road map to help government accelerate Australian innovation.
Citing Australia’s performance lag in science and mathematics and in business investment in research and development, the report’s foreword by ISA chair Bill Ferris calls for immediate action: ‘This is more than a canary chirp in our economic mineshaft: it is a clarion call for national action.’
The plan has developed 5 key strategies or ‘imperatives’ that recognise the key players in Australian innovation: education, industry, government, research and development, and culture and ambition. Making 30 recommendations, the plan explores a vision for strong economic growth; competitive industries; collaborative education institutions; plentiful, meaningful and productive jobs; and a fair and inclusive society with a high quality of life.
